Inspiring students in the aerospace industry

Posted: March 25, 2026

Our year 12 Physicists went on a trip to Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, hosted by former student, Dan English.  Dan is an engineer at Airbus and helps to design satellites, including the recently launched ‘Biomass’ satellite (this measures all the biomass in the forests across the entire Earth).  Our students had a full site tour where we saw several ‘clean rooms’ where satellites, rovers and other space equipment is made.  These clean rooms are needed so that there is no contamination from hair, dust or bacteria for equipment such as the Rosalind Franklin rover, which is currently being built.  This rover will be sent to Mars and will need to drill 2m into the surface of Mars to look for possible signs of life.  We even got to ‘visit Mars’ when we went to the Mars Rover testing room, where they test out the navigation systems of rovers on Mars-like terrain.  Our students had a fantastic time and were inspired to learn more about working in the aerospace industry.
